Since early 2024, the Dutch government has been tendering for measurement equipment for the LML (Landelijk Meetnet Luchtkwaliteit). With this new equipment, in addition to Particle Matter (PM), a data series can now also be built for Particle Number (PN) and ultrafine dust (UFP) that is spread over time and across the entire country. Measurement standards already available can be used for the measurements (European Committee for Standardization, 2016, 2020).
RIVM has measured ultrafine dust twice in the recent past as part of research on ultrafine dust in the vicinity of Schiphol Airport. In this, RIVM collaborated with TNO and GGD Amsterdam. The last measurement campaign around Schiphol started in August 2017 and was completed in August 2018. The measurements from 2017/2018 were used to test the computational model against the actual situation and to conduct epidemiological research, publications have appeared about this.
What is ultrafine dust also known as UFP ? Source: RIVM
Ultrafine dust is the particles in the air smaller than 0.1 µm. Each particle is 10,000 times smaller than a millimeter and cannot be seen with the eye.
What is (ultra) particulate matter? How does particulate matter affect your health? How is particulate matter created and where does it come from? Source:TNO
At so-called Supersites, combined forces of scientific research agencies measure particulate matter.
In Cabauw in Utrecht is a unique measuring station where TNO, together with TU Delft, KNMI, Wageningen University and Research, University of Groningen, Utrecht University, Free University Amsterdam, and RIVM study our atmosphere for greenhouse gases and particulate matter. This is how we get a better grip on climate change and air pollution.
The EU sets air quality standards to protect human health and the environment.
TSI writes about this on their website with the article: The new Ambient Air Quality
With a new EU initiative, an air quality program is being rolled out for all of Europe, which should be implemented in the laws and regulations of all European Union countries in the near future.
Soon with TSI equipment to be supplied by j.j. bos b.v., large-scale UFP measurements will be carried out throughout the Netherlands to map out where and how much UFP (Ultra Fine Particles) are present.
The TSI 3750-CEN10 and TSI 3789 particle counters have been chosen.
